I’ve already expressed once this week my love for all things retro. Design with a 50s and 60s flair has a sharp, distinctive aesthetic. I found these playing cards at my grandma’s house–she got them on a Delta Airlines flight many years ago. I was taken by the graphics and had to share right away!
Don’t you just want to hop a Chicago-bound flight back in time to the Mad Men era?

how long do you think the “vintage” and “retro” sensibility will be trendy? or, why does Gen Y have this tendency toward nostalgia for a time period when their parents were kids or their grandparents were young?
this is true in music – camera obscura, best coast
decor – half of AT home tours use the word vintage or retro, heavy on the mid-century modern. and the whole shabby-chic phenomenon
and fashion – modcloth
and in saying this I’m not judging, because I am a total sucker for the same things. my house was built in 1945 and I’d love to incorporate more decor that reflects the origins of the house.
maybe its all because of Mad Men. =)
Good points Andrea! I don’t know exactly why our generation loves it so much, although I’d like to think it’s a bold time in fashion and decor where almost anything goes and we take out and “recreate” the best from any decade..even the 80s and 90s :)
I personally have loved ‘retro-mod’ stuff my whole life. I struggle for the right words to describe it design-wise, but it’s that cheery, somewhat futuristic 1950s look. It just makes me happy, probably even moreso than 70s or other vintage/hipster stuff. Funny enough I’ve barely even watched Mad Men, but figured it would be a good description since it’s sweeping our culture right now :)
I have been internet-less for about a week and was busy packing before then. I am thieving the internet at a friend’s right now…so glad to be back on your blog!
And I LOVE this post. As K said, awesome find.
what a cool find!
Thanks ladies. I love finding treasures at my parents’ & grandparents’ houses!
